about

In late 2012 I joined the development team of a game called Americana Dawn. At the time, the game had an aesthetic that was very evocative of the 16bit Super Nintendo era of Japanese Role Playing Games. The music from these games were hugely influential on my development as a composer and I've spent thousands of hours listening to and dissecting them. At the time, it was an extremely exciting prospect for me to get to score a new game in that style so I took it upon myself to design an entirely new set of sounds meant to mimic the qualities and technical limitations of the soundtracks from that era.

The way things ended up working out, as the game continued to grow and evolve, we decided that it would be better served by a different soundscape, rather than being limited to the Super Nintendo aesthetic. By this point I'd already written over an hour of music using the 16bit soundset and rather than just disposing of all that material, I decided to release it all to my soundcloud account with permission from the game's developer.

As part of the restoration of my Bandcamp page (I wrote about why the material was temporarily removed here, for anyone who's curious what happened: twitter.com/Shnabubula/status/962377993166426114 ) I decided the time was right to finally release these as a downloadable album.

I want to be clear for anybody who has misconstrued the release of these songs. Americana Dawn is still in development and I am very excited about the new direction that we've taken with the music. This album being published does not mean the project is dead, as some had speculated during the soundcloud release. I very much look forward to the eventual release of the final game as well as the soundtrack that will accompany it at that time.
